Burg Schwalenberg bei Schieder-Schwalenberg an der WeserThe castle Schwalenberg was founded together with the town by the Count Volkwin III of Schwalenberg in the first half of the 13th century. In an entry, in the archdeacon register from 1231 the indication "oppidium Saulenberg" can already be found.

The Counts of Schwalenberg came from a family, which reaches all the way back to the time of Karl des Großen (Karl the Great) and carriers of the high offices. But in the Middle Ages, they belonged to the most feared "robber knights" of northern Germany and also participated in the conspiracy against the Archbishop Engelbert of Koln / Cologne, who was attacked and killed. As penalty to this deed, the brothers Volkwin and Adolf of Schwalenberg were imposed to build monastries, such as the monastry Mariental (A. D. 1228) by Netze near Waldeck and the monastry Falkenhagen by Lugde.

Volkwin III left the ancestral castle of his ancestors, the Oldenburg by Marienmunster and made Schwalenburg to his residence. He died approximately in the year 1249 and lies buried in the monastry Falkenhagen by Lugde.

With the death of HenryVII, about a hundred years later, a big part of the shire became possession of the noble gentlemen of Lippe and the bishopric of Paderborn. Mit dem Aussterben der Schwalenberger Grafen trat auch die ehemals stolze Burg einen wechselhaften Schicksalsweg an, der diese beinahe zum Untergang führte.
With the extinction of the Counts of Schwalenberg the former proud castle also took on an alternating path of fate, which almost lead it to its downfall.

In the beginning of the 20th century, the former castle was preserved, by arranging the Paragialssitz (compensation of the side line of a governing house) for princess Friedrich (Friederike).

After the confusion of the Weimar republic the castle was remolded and used as a mother's convalescent home from 1938 to 1945 and from 1946 to 1962 as an evangelic children's recreation home.

In 1962 and 1963 the castle was rebuilt as a hotel and is under the management of its new owners, the Family Saul-Feuchter, since 1971.
